The Road to...
Adventure Travel Magazine
November/December 2008
"Having decided to fulfill a lifelong ambition
to ride a motorcycle across the Sahara
Desert, Alun Davies sets off to the Sierra
Nevada Mountains in Southern Spain to get
some off-road tips from the experts... I’ve just had
one of the most exciting, scary and
fun packed adventure travel experiences to date and given the
choice, I’d go back for more of the
same right now.
God damn it, I loved it..."

Trails And Tribulations
Boys Toys Magazine
December 2008
"Boys Toys gets stuck into some serious off-roading in southern Spain. I’m spitting hot, Andalucian sand from my mouth as the sweat trickles down my chest, back, face - well - everywhere. I’m stuck down a fissure, with a twenty-foot drop below me. I’m trapped underneath a purring red beast, which (I’m convinced) has been trying to kill me for the last two days..."

Getting Away With It
Moto Magazine
"Ever wanted to escape the cold, dark winter days for a motorcycle jolly around the warmer climes of the spanish mountains? no? well maybe you should, it might just be one of the best things you ever did. Sometimes even racing motocross can all be that little bit too much - there I said it!...
...So sometimes it’s good to put that pride on the backburner and just simply take something for what it is, like riding a dirtbike."

Mad Dogs & English Men...
Two Wheels Only Magazine
November 2008
"When the sun is beating down and
it’s over 44 degrees, the best thing to
do is swathe yourself in bike gear and
head outdoors. We discover
the best off-road holiday in Spain…
...I’ve just had the best few days riding of the whole year and
all it took was a cheap British Airways flight to Malaga. The
rest is kind of up to you depending on what tickles your
trout. I plumped for a spot of dirt biking..."

What we think of our High Profile Guests...
John McGuinness, Steve Plater, Leon Haslam, Cal Crutchlow, James Ellison and Steve Brogan
Every one of these guys totally realize the privileged position they are in with their careers. All the guys had their own ego’s which every racer has to have, it’s part of their self belief and focus to keep them fast.
The bit I liked was how the guys helped the other less experienced riders, for example we arrived at an icy cold river, the water was up to your knees and it came over and into your boots, not nice! Without hesitation, John McGuinness and Steve Plater both just got straight into the river to help everyone else through.
So yes we do see these riders as “gods” but they are all respectful, proper good blokes. They totally understand the dangers they put themselves in to do their jobs and please the crowd. John showed me a photo of the front row of one of his races and said “They are all dead now apart from me”. I asked how that made him feel to which he replied “I just hope it’s quick if it happens” and then moved on. I guess it just becomes a daily hazard of the job.
They make huge personal sacrifices for their work. Leon for example said that he spent 3 days in his own home in the space of 3 months, all his time was spent going from circuit to circuit, testing, training and racing. Sounds really glam but they all get really fed up of not having a “normal” home life. All of the guys had to watch very carefully what they ate and drank as it’s vital that they stay light and in good shape. No point in having a fantastic Blade that’s on the weight limit that’s ridden by a bouncer.
Steve Plater missed the birth of his first baby because he was racing at The Le Mans 24 hour. I’m not sure if he was there for the second one either... Mrs Plater must be a very understanding lady!
In summary, respectful, genuine, hard working, focused but reassuringly normal blokes who loved to mess around and have fun on motorcycles. They were all fast, exceptionally skilled and a pleasure to ride out with.
I would like to thank Steve Martindale from Honda UK and Mark Davies from Honda Europe for making all this happen. I love riding motorcycles and riding out with all these guys was a very special experience for me.
Just in case anyone was wondering, I may be a little grey on top but Ian held his own in this great company... couldn’t quite keep up with McGuinness at the MX track though. Bugger!
In the group was a certain Mr Roger Harvey, top 35 Moto-X racer from the 80’s, my childhood hero. I remember cheering him on from the fence, just a face in the crowd at Hawkstone Park. It was a special time in my little life to ride out with Roger here at Redtread and what’s more he was a top bloke.
Both Ian and Sally would like to thank everyone who came to Spain to play with our toy’s, we hope you enjoyed your stay and hope you felt that you made the right choice. We would love to see you again so please keep in touch and watch this space for Morocco 2010!

British and World Superbike racer
"Because my dad, Ron, has the riding school at Donnington, I know from many years of development at his place how a school should be run properly. Redtread is exactly that, a school which is run properly with great instruction, excellent Honda CRF’s, proper bike mechanicing, first class protective clothing, excellent accommodation and an all round brilliant atmosphere plus most importantly awesome riding. I had a ball and loved every minute. Can’t wait to get the time to do it all again!
Cheers, Leon. 91"

2006 – British Supersport Champion
"The problem with this type of “experience” is that they all get tarred with the same brush. Some unsuspecting chap goes riding abroad with a group of mates, they pay to ride knackered “chicken chasers” in crappy gear for a few days with some random bloke guide and get to sleep in a bunk house eating Pot Noodles, then come back and tell EVERYONE “don’t bother then are all rubbish!”. Let me tell you they are not all the same. Redtread was fantastic. Every bit of it was as good as it gets. I know what I like and I liked this a lot. Ian’s not bad on a bike either! Laters, Cal."
